Methodology

Source. Prices are published by fuel retailers under the CMA open fuel price scheme, introduced after the Competition and Markets Authority's road fuel market study. We collect them throughout the day.

Coverage. This edition covers 7,971 forecourts reporting a usable unleaded price in the week beginning 24 August 2026.

Averaging. Figures are the unweighted mean of the price at each forecourt. A site is one observation regardless of how much fuel it sells, so this is an average of prices available, not of fuel purchased. Supermarket-heavy regions will read slightly lower than a volume-weighted measure.

Exclusions. Prices below 100p or above 300p a litre are excluded as data errors - a handful of sites report in pounds rather than pence. Records not updated within 30 days of the most recent feed update are excluded as stale. Regions with fewer than 20 reporting forecourts are omitted from the regional table.

Regions. Forecourts are assigned to a region from their postcode using ONS geography. Region boundaries follow the standard statistical regions of England plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Revisions. Each edition is a snapshot taken at the start of the week and is not revised afterwards. If a retailer corrects a price later, the correction appears in the following edition rather than changing a published one.
