This is the most demanding part of the UK to plan fuel around. Stations are genuinely far apart, some close on Sundays, and on the islands supply depends on a ferry that does not sail in every weather. Prices here are the highest in the country and the reason is logistics rather than anything else.
Inverness is the obvious hub and by some margin the cheapest place in the region to fill a tank. Fort William, Thurso, Wick, Ullapool and Portree are the other practical anchors. Once you are on the A832, the A838 or the single track sections of the North Coast 500, treat every open forecourt as an opportunity rather than assuming there will be another one shortly.
Anyone driving the NC500 or heading for Skye, Mull, Lewis or Orkney should build refuelling into the route rather than improvising. Running down to a quarter tank in this part of Scotland is how a good trip turns into a long wait.
