How much does the average UK driver spend on fuel?
The average UK driver covers around 7,400 miles per year according to Department for Transport data. At current petrol prices and assuming an average fuel efficiency of 40 MPG, that works out to approximately £1,200 to £1,300 per year on petrol alone.
However, actual fuel costs vary enormously depending on your mileage, your car's efficiency, what fuel type you use, and - crucially - where you fill up.
How is fuel cost calculated?
The calculation is straightforward:
- Convert your MPG to litres per mile: divide 4.54609 (litres per gallon) by your MPG
- Multiply by your annual mileage to get total litres consumed
- Multiply by your price per litre to get the annual cost
For example: 40 MPG = 0.1136 litres per mile. At 8,000 miles per year that's 909 litres. At 145p per litre that's £1,318 per year.
How much can I save by switching to the cheapest local station?
In most UK areas, prices vary by 8p to 12p per litre between the most and least expensive nearby stations. On 909 litres per year, a saving of 10p per litre is worth over £90 per year - just by spending 10 seconds checking our app to see where you should fill up.
