Two forecourts a mile apart can differ by more than 10p a litre, which is around £5 on a typical fill, so the petrol station you drive past out of habit is often not the one you should be using. We track 7,896 petrol stations across 2,266 UK towns and show you what each one is charging right now.

What fuel costs in the UK today

Unleaded currently averages 167.2p a litre nationally, with the cheapest forecourt we can see at 142.9p. Diesel averages 188.6p and starts at 159.9p. Those national figures are a useful benchmark, but the number that matters is what your local station is charging. Finding the cheapest diesel and petrol near me

Supermarket forecourts are usually the cheapest option: Costco averages 157.3p against Shell at 171.4p, a gap of 14.1p across the same fuel. But that is an average, and a well-placed independent competing with a supermarket will often undercut both. Sorting by price rather than assuming a brand is cheapest is the habit worth building - you can compare every fuel brand here.

Where our prices come from

Every price comes from the Competition and Markets Authority open data scheme, which requires retailers to publish what they are charging and keep it current. It is the same source the government uses to monitor the fuel market, so these are verified pump prices rather than estimates or crowd-sourced guesses.
