The South West is a region of two halves. From Bristol and Gloucester down through Somerset the market is competitive and well supplied, with plenty of supermarket forecourts and easy motorway access. Past Exeter the peninsula narrows, the roads slow down and the pricing changes character.

Cornwall and west Devon carry a genuine remoteness premium. Everything arrives by road down the A30 or A38, and stations at the far end of that supply chain price accordingly. The difference between filling in Exeter and filling near Penzance can be substantial, which is why regulars top up before crossing the Tamar.

Summer transforms the whole region. Holiday traffic on the A30, A38 and A39 lifts demand for months and the smaller coastal stations can be stretched during changeover weekends. Bristol, Gloucester, Taunton and Exeter are the practical refuelling points on the way down, and Quedgeley and the Gloucester supermarket sites frequently show up among the cheapest in the country.
