Fuel prices around England

England holds the densest forecourt network in the UK, and that density is exactly why prices differ so sharply over short distances. It is entirely normal to find eight or nine pence a litre between two stations that sit fifteen minutes apart, particularly where a supermarket has opened near a cluster of older independents and forced everyone to respond.

The motorway spine does most of the heavy lifting. The M1, M6 and A1(M) carry freight between the northern cities, the Midlands and London, while the M25 redistributes it around the capital. Service areas on those routes price for convenience and captive demand, so the sensible move on a long run is to come off at a junction with a retail park attached rather than paying the premium at the services themselves.

Holiday traffic reshapes the map every summer. The A30 and A303 fill with cars heading for Devon and Cornwall, and stations along those corridors see demand climb for a few months. The same happens on the roads into the Lake District and around the North York Moors. Out of season those same forecourts can be among the quieter ones on the network.

Weather matters more than people expect. A wet spell over the Pennines or a cold snap across the Norfolk flats pushes drivers to fill up earlier than they otherwise would, and rural stations with a single tanker delivery a week feel that shift quickly. Anyone who regularly crosses the Peak District or the Yorkshire Dales already knows to top up before the climb rather than after it.
