Should You Run Your Car on Premium E5 Petrol Only?
The E10 Anxiety
When E10 petrol became the standard UK fuel in 2021, it sparked a wave of anxiety among motorists. With horror stories circulating online about ethanol destroying seals and ruining engines, many drivers of perfectly modern cars decided to play it safe and switch exclusively to Petrol Super (E5).
While this guarantees a lower ethanol content, it comes at a steep financial cost. Premium E5 is often 15p to 20p more expensive per litre. Over a year of driving, this "safety tax" can cost you hundreds of pounds.
The Engineering Reality
The reality is that automotive engineers have been preparing for high-ethanol fuels for decades. Every single petrol car manufactured for the European market since 2011 is legally required to be fully compatible with E10. All of their fuel lines, gaskets, and plastic components are designed to withstand the solvent properties of ethanol without breaking a sweat.
When is E5 Actually Necessary?
If you drive a standard Ford Fiesta, VW Golf, or Vauxhall Polo built in the last 15 years, running it on Premium E5 is a complete waste of money. The car will not run significantly better, and the engine is in no danger from E10.
There are only two scenarios where you must use E5:
1. You drive a classic car or a vehicle built before 2001 (which lack modern ethanol-resistant rubber).
2. You drive a high-performance sports car (like a Porsche or a BMW M-car) that specifically requires the higher 97+ Octane rating found in premium fuels to prevent engine knock.
If you fall into one of those two categories, finding cheap E5 is critical. Use the FindPetrol search tool and select "Petrol Super (E5)" to find the most affordable E5 pumps near you.
Local prices differ far more than most drivers expect. For a worked example, see current petrol prices in Edinburgh.
