The North East runs a compact and genuinely competitive fuel market. Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and the Teesside towns sit close enough together that pricing moves in step, and the supermarket forecourts across Tyne and Wear are among the keener ones in the north of England.

Teesside gives the region an industrial diesel base that few other places match. The chemical works, the port at Teesport and the haulage running in and out of Middlesbrough and Stockton keep volumes high all year, and the stations along the A19 and A66 price with that trade in mind.

Northumberland is the outlier. North of Morpeth the network thins quickly, and along the A68, the A697 and the coast road toward Berwick the gaps between stations get long. Anyone heading for the Cheviots, Kielder or the border should fill up in Newcastle, Morpeth, Hexham or Alnwick and not leave it to chance.
