Why do prices vary by region?

Fuel prices vary across the UK due to differences in local competition, distance from refineries, operating costs, and the mix of supermarket versus branded stations in each area.

London and the South East often have higher prices due to the massive overheads of running a retail forecourt in those locations (including higher business rates and land values). Conversely, areas with incredibly strong, dense supermarket competition-like Northern Ireland or Yorkshire-tend to be driven downward as retailers engage in aggressive, hyper-local price wars to win drivers' custom.
