Cheapest region
Greater Belfast
166.2p petrol
Most expensive region
Highlands and Islands
177.7p petrol
The gap between the cheapest and most expensive region is 11.5p a litre - about £6.33 on a 55-litre fill. Within a single town the gap is often wider still; compare stations near you.
Petrol and diesel over time
UK average pence per litre, one point per weekly edition.
Where the crude oil price goes, and how fast it reaches the pumps. About a third of the pump price is
crude oil - the single biggest moving part - so we track the two together and measure how much of a
crude move actually reaches the pump, and whether rises travel faster than falls.
In October 2026, Brent crude averaged $122.10 a barrel (up 7.0% vs the previous month). Of the 174.0p average petrol price, about
57.3p was crude,
53.0p duty,
29.0p VAT, and
34.7p refining, delivery and retail - the margin
chain between oil leaving a refinery and fuel entering your tank.
Do stations pass a falling oil price on as fast as a rising one? Measured across
312 weeks of UK data
(October 2020 to October 2026, weeks around
duty changes excluded): a 10% rise in crude adds about 3.6p to a litre
of petrol within a month, while a 10% fall takes about 2.6p off -
when crude jumps, stations reprice quickly; when it slides back, the saving arrives more slowly and less completely.
Brent has fallen 12.8%
over the ten trading days to 26 October ($125.78 to $109.62).
At the usual pace of pass-through, that implies petrol easing by around
3.4p a litre over the coming weeks - a mechanical
estimate of how prices usually behave, not a forecast.
Crude converted at a stated $1.34 to the pound; duty is the 52.95p rate
in force since March 2022; VAT is 20% of the final price. Full method and caveats in the
data methodology.

Methodology
Source. Prices are published by fuel retailers under the CMA open fuel price scheme, introduced after the Competition and Markets Authority's road fuel market study. We collect them throughout the day.
Coverage. This edition covers 8,032 forecourts reporting a usable petrol price in the week beginning 19 October 2026.
Averaging. Figures are the unweighted mean of the price at each forecourt. A site is one observation regardless of how much fuel it sells, so this is an average of prices available, not of fuel purchased. Supermarket-heavy regions will read slightly lower than a volume-weighted measure.
Exclusions. Prices below 100p or above 300p a litre are excluded as data errors - a handful of sites report in pounds rather than pence. Records not updated within 30 days of the most recent feed update are excluded as stale. Regions with fewer than 20 reporting forecourts are omitted from the regional table.
Regions. Forecourts are assigned to a region from their postcode using ONS geography. Region boundaries follow the standard statistical regions of England plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Revisions. Each edition is a snapshot taken at the start of the week and is not revised afterwards. If a retailer corrects a price later, the correction appears in the following edition rather than changing a published one.
