The south covers Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders, and Ayrshire is the part that matters most for price. Kilmarnock, Ayr, Irvine and Stevenston consistently produce some of the cheapest pumps anywhere in Scotland, helped by a strong independent presence trading against the supermarkets.

Dumfries and Galloway is shaped by the A75 and the ferry traffic running to Cairnryan for Northern Ireland. That road carries a steady flow of freight, and the stations along it are used to serving drivers who are part way through a long journey.

The Borders are quieter. Between Hawick, Jedburgh, Kelso and Galashiels the network is thin and the roads are slow, so fill in Dumfries, Ayr, Galashiels or Carlisle before crossing rather than relying on finding something on the A7 or A68.
