Fuel prices around Scotland

Scotland splits neatly into two fuel markets. The Central Belt, running from Glasgow through Falkirk and Stirling across to Edinburgh, behaves much like any densely populated part of England: plenty of supermarket forecourts, real competition and prices that move quickly when one operator blinks. Step outside that corridor and the rules change.

North and west, the distances start to matter. Delivery costs rise, competition thins out and a single station can serve an area the size of an English county. Prices there are not high because anyone is profiteering; they reflect what it costs to get a tanker up a single track road in February. Drivers heading for Skye, Ullapool, the far north coast or the islands should treat a half empty tank as a prompt rather than a warning.

Diesel demand is shaped by agriculture, forestry and the whisky and salmon logistics chains, which keep tankers moving year round on roads that see very little car traffic in winter. Petrol turnover swings hard with the tourist season, particularly along the North Coast 500 where summer volumes can be several times the January figure.

If you are crossing the country rather than driving locally, fill up in a town before you commit to the scenic route. Aberdeen, Inverness, Perth, Fort William and Stirling all sit at useful decision points, and the difference between filling there and filling forty miles later is usually worth several pounds a tank.
