Petrol and diesel prices around Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has consistently been one of the cheapest places in the UK to buy fuel, and the reason is straightforward: it is the only part of the UK sharing a land border with another fuel market. Retailers on this side price with one eye on the pumps in Donegal, Monaghan and Louth, and that cross border pressure keeps margins tighter than almost anywhere in Great Britain.

The independent sector is unusually strong here. Where much of England is dominated by the big supermarket forecourts and the major oil brands, Northern Ireland has a deep bench of family run and locally owned stations that compete hard on headline price. Maxol, Go and a long list of single site operators trade directly against the multiples.

Belfast and the surrounding commuter towns see the most movement day to day. Further west, around Fermanagh, Tyrone and the Derry hinterland, prices respond quickly to the euro exchange rate because a swing of a few cents changes whether a cross border run is worth making.

Diesel volumes are heavy across the region thanks to agriculture and haulage, and the network reflects that with a lot of forecourts carrying both standard and premium grades even in small towns.
