The Geography of Fuel: Why is Petrol Cheaper in Certain Towns?
The Postcode Lottery
One of the most frustrating things about driving in the UK is the "postcode lottery" of fuel prices. You can fill up at an Asda in your hometown for 139p, drive 30 miles down the motorway, and see another Asda selling the exact same fuel for 146p. Why do brands charge completely different prices across the country?
Hyper-Local Competition
The primary driver of regional fuel prices is hyper-local competition. Supermarkets do not set one flat national price for fuel. Instead, store managers (or automated pricing algorithms) constantly monitor the prices of rival petrol stations within a tight 3 to 5-mile radius.
If a town has an Asda, a Tesco, a Morrisons, and a Sainsbury's all within a few miles of each other, they will engage in a brutal price war, undercutting each other by pennies to win your custom. This drives the price down for the entire town.
The Rural Penalty
Conversely, if you live in a rural village where the only petrol station is an independent BP, and the nearest supermarket is 15 miles away, that BP has a local monopoly. They know you aren't going to waste 30 miles of fuel driving to the supermarket, so they artificially inflate their profit margins.
Refinery Proximity
A smaller, secondary factor is the cost of transport. Stations located very close to major UK oil refineries or coastal import terminals (like those near the Humber Estuary or Southampton) have much lower tanker delivery costs, and those savings are often passed down to the pumps.
Taking Control
You cannot change where you live, but you can change where you fill up. If you commute between towns, checking FindPetrol's live map allows you to see if your destination town is currently locked in a supermarket price war, allowing you to fill up at the cheaper end of your journey.
Prices vary widely between sites even within one chain - see current Tesco fuel prices across the UK.
Where to find the cheapest fuel near you
Supermarket forecourts usually undercut the oil majors, but the gap varies enormously by town - a competitive independent will often beat a supermarket that has no rivals nearby. You can compare every UK fuel brand side by side, or search your postcode to find the cheapest petrol near me right now. The UK average is currently 161.4p a litre across 7,916 stations.
