Does Using the Heater Waste Fuel in Winter?

By the FindPetrol Team ·

The Winter Comfort Question

As temperatures plummet across the UK, drivers immediately crank the cabin heater up to maximum. Given that running the air conditioning in the summer can reduce your fuel economy by up to 10%, many drivers naturally assume that generating blazing hot air in the winter must also be draining their petrol tank. Surprisingly, it isn't.

Free Heat

Internal combustion engines are incredibly inefficient machines. Over 60% of the energy produced by burning petrol or diesel isn't used to turn the wheels-it is lost entirely as waste heat.

To stop the engine from melting itself, your car pumps a mixture of water and antifreeze (coolant) around the engine block to absorb that massive heat. This boiling hot liquid is then routed to a radiator at the front of the car to be cooled down by the wind.

The Heater Matrix

When you turn on your cabin heater, your car simply diverts some of that boiling hot engine coolant through a tiny secondary radiator inside the dashboard, known as the "heater matrix." A small electric fan then blows air over this hot matrix and directly into your face.

Because the heat is entirely a byproduct of the engine running normally, you are simply recycling waste energy. Turning the temperature dial to maximum does not force the engine to burn a single extra drop of fuel.

The Only Caveat

The only part of the heating system that uses energy is the electric fan blowing the air, which pulls a microscopic amount of power from the alternator. But the heat itself? 100% free. So crank the heat up, stay warm, and focus your energy on finding the cheapest local fuel instead.

Local prices differ far more than most drivers expect. For a worked example, see current petrol prices in Liverpool.

Checking diesel prices near you

Whatever you drive, the price you pay depends far more on which forecourt you use than on anything else. Diesel currently starts at 144.9p a litre across the 7,916 stations we track, against a UK average of 182.6p - a spread worth several pounds on a full tank. Search your postcode to see diesel prices near me ranked cheapest first, or browse fuel prices by area to see how your town compares.
