Are Eco Tyres Worth the Extra Money?

The Rolling Resistance Battle

As you drive down the road, your tyres constantly deform and flex as they make contact with the tarmac. This flexing creates friction, known as "rolling resistance." Your engine has to burn fuel simply to overcome this friction. In fact, roughly 20% of your car's total fuel consumption is used just to conquer the rolling resistance of your tyres.

Enter the Eco Tyre

To combat this, major manufacturers like Michelin, Continental, and Goodyear developed "Eco" tyres (Low Rolling Resistance tyres). These use advanced, stiffer rubber compounds and shallower tread blocks to minimize flexing. Because they roll much easier, the engine doesn't have to work as hard, which instantly boosts your MPG.

The Financial Payoff

Do they work? Yes. High-quality Eco tyres can improve your fuel economy by 3% to 5% compared to standard budget tyres. If you spend £1,500 a year on fuel, a set of Eco tyres could save you roughly £60 a year.

However, Eco tyres are usually significantly more expensive to purchase upfront than standard tyres. It can often take two or three years of driving just to break even on the initial purchase cost.

The Compromise

Eco tyres are incredibly hard and stiff, which means they often generate more road noise in the cabin and can slightly reduce grip in wet braking conditions compared to softer, high-performance tyres.

If you do high mileage on motorways, Eco tyres are a brilliant investment. But if you are just looking for quick, immediate ways to cut costs, keeping your current tyres correctly inflated and using FindPetrol to locate the cheapest local pumps will yield far better daily savings.

Local prices differ far more than most drivers expect. For a worked example, see current petrol prices in Glasgow.
