The Hidden Reserve

Car manufacturers know that humans are inherently prone to pushing their luck. When the fuel gauge hits zero and the light comes on, your tank is not actually empty. Almost all modern cars are designed to trigger the warning light when there is approximately 10% to 15% of the fuel tank's capacity remaining.

For a standard family hatchback with a 50-litre tank, this means you still have roughly 5 to 7 litres of fuel hidden in the reserve. Driven carefully at 50 mph, this will realistically get you another 30 to 45 miles before the engine finally splutters and dies.

The Danger of Driving on Empty

While it's reassuring to know you have a buffer, you should never make a habit of driving with the light on.

Your car's electric fuel pump is submerged at the bottom of the fuel tank. It relies on the liquid fuel surrounding it to act as a coolant. When the fuel level drops too low, the pump is exposed to air and can quickly overheat and burn out-resulting in a repair bill that easily exceeds £300.

Furthermore, running low allows the pump to suck up sediment and debris that has settled at the bottom of the tank, which can clog your fuel filter and injectors. The golden rule?
