Manual vs Automatic: Which Uses Less Fuel Today?

Furthermore, modern automatics are linked directly to the engine's computer. They calculate the exact millisecond to shift gears for peak efficiency-something a human driver simply cannot replicate consistently. Many new automatics also feature "coasting" modes that seamlessly disconnect the engine from the wheels when going downhill to save even more fuel.

The Verdict

If you are buying a car built before 2010, the manual version will almost certainly save you money at the pump. But if you are buying a modern car, the automatic version is now frequently rated as more fuel-efficient by WLTP testing standards.
