Are Motorway Service Station Prices Higher?

Yes - motorway services charge about 10.5p a litre more than everywhere else. Across the 241 motorway service forecourts we track, unleaded averages 171.4p against 160.9p at the other 7,745 stations. On a 55-litre fill that is £5.78 extra for the same fuel.

The premium, measured

On a 55-litre tank that is £5.78 for petrol and £5.12 for diesel. For a van or estate with a 70-litre tank, £7.35.

Why they charge more

Motorway service areas are expensive to run and operate under conditions ordinary forecourts do not face. Sites are leased under long agreements with obligations around 24-hour opening, staffing, parking and free facilities. Delivery is more complex, and the operator has a captive market: once you are between junctions with a warning light on, you are not comparing prices.

There is no rule requiring motorway fuel to be dearer. It is a commercial decision that the location makes possible.

Is coming off the motorway worth it?

Usually yes, if there is a cheaper station within a few miles of the junction.

A car doing 40mpg burns roughly 18p of fuel a mile at the current average. A four-mile round trip off the motorway costs about 72p in fuel plus perhaps ten minutes. Against a £5.78 saving on a 55-litre fill, that is clearly worthwhile.

The practical approach

• Fill before you join. The simplest rule. A supermarket near your starting point averages 159.1p against 171.4p at services - a 12.3p difference.
• Put in enough to reach a junction town. If you must stop at services, £10 to reach somewhere cheaper beats filling the tank at the higher price.
• Check the junction before you need it. Search the postcode of the next town on findpetrol and you will see what is actually there.
• Do not gamble on range. A 10p saving is not worth running dry on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder.

Trunk road services are not the same

A-road services and truck stops are typically dearer than a supermarket but well below motorway prices. If your route allows an A-road alternative, the premium is usually a few pence rather than double figures.

No. Operators set their own prices. National Highways requires services to display fuel prices on approach signs at many locations, which is a transparency measure rather than a cap.

Is the fuel at services different?

No. It meets the same BS EN 228 and BS EN 590 standards as any other UK fuel. You are paying for the location.

What about electric charging at services?

Rapid charging at motorway services carries a similar location premium over home charging, though the pricing structure is different. That is a separate comparison from pump prices.
